So, what’s Little Syria?

In 2019, I took part in a walking tour of Little Syria, a neighborhood located in modern-day Tribeca and The Financial District. Having spent many years of my life on Manhattan's Lower West Side, I was shocked to learn of the existence of a former Arab enclave razed for the construction of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, adjacent to the World Trade Center complex.

<img width="3840" height="1208" width_o="3840" height_o="1208" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/32fec9087d8f2290e8f4e34de4425a488eb02cbd8de0fda89364dfd55ad39435/Slide-16_9---40.png" data-mid="171900200" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/32fec9087d8f2290e8f4e34de4425a488eb02cbd8de0fda89364dfd55ad39435/Slide-16_9---40.png" />
From 1880-1924, The United States experienced its first wave of mass immigration. During these four decades, more than 95,000 Arabs emigrated from their native countries in search of economic opportunities and in hopes of beginning new lives. Although Arab Americans were an integral part of the Lower West Side’s history, Arab American culture is often either misunderstood or overlooked. Many New Yorkers who frequent Manhattan’s Lower West Side are not aware of the existence of the former Little Syria.

<img width="5760" height="1812" width_o="5760" height_o="1812" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f9dd5d662d11805ae8e2566737470c6f654477bb1f82b00f0ca38933bd932674/Slide-16_9---30.png" data-mid="139200997" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f9dd5d662d11805ae8e2566737470c6f654477bb1f82b00f0ca38933bd932674/Slide-16_9---30.png" />
Today, of the over 3.7 million Arab Americans living in the United States, most are no longer immigrants but are native-born. With anti-Arab sentiments growing in the United States, and an increase in racial profiling and bias against Arab-Americans, we should strive to counteract prejudice and to learn more about this group of Americans and their cultures as well as about the past history of currently gentrifying neighborhoods.

Research, ideation, and iteration

The early 1900s represented the prime of Little Syria, as the neighborhood began to decline in the 1940s due to eminent domain and the construction of Robert Moses’ historic Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. This structure mitigated concerns over increasing traffic on the Williamsburg, Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, but displaced over over 1,500 residents within the former Arab-American enclave.
Little Syria thrived at a time before ZIP codes were introduced in 1963. Upon digging into historic archives, it was difficult to obtain census information based on geographic location. So as to better understand Little Syria at the height of its success, I uncovered a 1930’s Syrian American directory and used text extraction software to digitize the records for all businesses within the borough of Manhattan.
<img width="1920" height="1084" width_o="1920" height_o="1084" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8faada3a31c33000250c51f7674c363b59aa0f5e9d8030ef3b152a7f4ef8d8a4/Slide-16_9---41.png" data-mid="171943498" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8faada3a31c33000250c51f7674c363b59aa0f5e9d8030ef3b152a7f4ef8d8a4/Slide-16_9---41.png" />
I geocoded over 600+ addresses, transported the data into Tableau, filtered the entries by business type, and isolated the businesses within the boundaries of the former neighborhood. I manually fixed any errors including invalid geocodes, and after 7+ iterations of error detection and correction within the dataset, I was left with over 174 businesses within the boundaries of former Little Syria.&nbsp;

My visualizations are inspired by a Syrian lace tablecloth, one exhibited by New York Historical Society and was brought over from Syria in the late 1920s. Since lace and embroideries were the most popular type of business in 1930’s Little Syria, the lace-like web represents the circularity of the neighborhood and the interconnected nature of all who were part of it.

<img width="5760" height="3126" width_o="5760" height_o="3126" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5d612e437c77464ce5cd71c92f056a5df8d184bedf0804896a043250f1131928/Slide-16_9---25.png" data-mid="139200996" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5d612e437c77464ce5cd71c92f056a5df8d184bedf0804896a043250f1131928/Slide-16_9---25.png" />

When you walk on the Lower West Side today, you see a quickly gentrifying neighborhood lined with skyscrapers. While I could’ve easily created visualizations using automated mapping software, I chose to create these visualizations on Adobe Illustrator, using more analog means, to pay homage to Arab lace-making traditions.&nbsp;
<img width="1920" height="901" width_o="1920" height_o="901" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6417f1825a385ad71f93f1a49eeef0e9f037d973433754dc259c1995ad3bbb43/Slide-16_9---37.png" data-mid="139201006" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6417f1825a385ad71f93f1a49eeef0e9f037d973433754dc259c1995ad3bbb43/Slide-16_9---37.png" />
The final visualizations

The 174 total businesses within Little Syria, in the 1930’s directory, were classified into over 50 general categories. I then split the businesses into 10 distinct industries based on the North American Industry Classification System. Each distinct circular pattern represents a different industry, and each motif is a single business. By adding on one industry at a time, I figuratively construct the fabric of the neighborhood through information design.

// Lace and embroidaries, as crafts, require percision and attention to detail. But often, the analog nature of the crafts may lead to unintentional errors. I am aware of the inevitability of human error and of possible impurities within my dataset, but the purpose of this project is to shed light on remnants of New York City history, not for complete data accuracy.

🚨🚨🚨 If you haven’t already, please read:&nbsp;Combining data and design to shed light on Little Syria, a forgotten NYC ethnic enclave before scrolling further. This is a continuation of a multi-media experience centered around historical conciousness and awareness.🚨🚨🚨 &nbsp;

The problemAwareness of local history affects our communities and our relations to the residents within them, but many New Yorkers are apathetic towards learning about their local history.
Based on interviews with 20+ New York City high schoolers, the top five reasons they do not like learning about history are:
1. History is boring
2. History is just about dead people
3. History is simply rote memorization
4. History is all lectures and long textbook readings
5. History is irrelevant

SolutionA platform that helps individuals visualize history so it becomes fun, engaging, and relevant to learn.

Often, many think of history as just lectures and textbook readings. The study of history should not be limited to a classroom setting.

<img width="1000" height="585" width_o="1000" height_o="585" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d1d59ecace2416263d5b088550cfbf1c8e1c355a16d6aa24a75f46d6037164cf/syriagif1.gif" data-mid="137985612" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d1d59ecace2416263d5b088550cfbf1c8e1c355a16d6aa24a75f46d6037164cf/syriagif1.gif" />
Augmented reality can help illuminate stories from the past. When primary sources are presented through an interactive and engaging format, individuals are more likely to visualize history as real things that happened to real people.Users would be allowed to take pictures during AR exhibitions, and these images would autosave to their camera rolls. Social sharing is not an option on the exhibitions tab to prevent distraction and potential drop-off from the exhibition experience.

Connecting the past and present with location-based exhibitions<img width="1000" height="642" width_o="1000" height_o="642" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e77a93abd298ce5887fd30d6f1d2ba56785b7b3a8e0c3d60d77532d965817632/bridge.gif" data-mid="143025344" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e77a93abd298ce5887fd30d6f1d2ba56785b7b3a8e0c3d60d77532d965817632/bridge.gif" />Certain exhibitions are location specific. For instance, “Bridge to the Past: Artifacts From Little Syria” is meant to be viewed on Robert R. Douglass Bridge, otherwise known as the West Thames Street Pedestrian Bridge.
Situated by the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, which was built after Little Syria was razed, this bridge is a crucial link above West Street connecting Battery Park City and the Financial District. Users would view primary sources and learn about the history of Little Syria while walking on a structure that oversees where the former enclave once stood.

Since the appearance of SnapChat and Instagram, postcards have decreased in popularity. Buying and sending postcards, however, remains a way to show the places an individual has been and the things they’ve seen.

<img width="1000" height="585" width_o="1000" height_o="585" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5612f1d2d0285aabd4a7ea16ed3c2ae6193c39c389d586b9faaa689bc2aa2826/syriagif4.gif" data-mid="137985613" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5612f1d2d0285aabd4a7ea16ed3c2ae6193c39c389d586b9faaa689bc2aa2826/syriagif4.gif" />Using either historical photographs or exhibition snapshots, users would then be able to create unique digital postcards, customize notes about what they’ve learned, and top their postcards off with exhibition-specific stamps.

Many individuals collect postcards out of nostalgia – to reminisce about a certain time or place. The pictures and messages on these postcards serve as digital alternatives to history flashcards.

Digital sharing, through more traditional means such as text messages and email, can help modern users embrace history as a relevant and engaging subject without the need to glamorize and market the experience through social media.

	Commonplace blackout poetry: Discerning patterns of thinking through the information I write down.

What is a commonplace book?
A commonplace book is a central depository for quotes, anecdotes, observations, and information gleaned from books, conversations, movies, lyrics, social media posts, podcasts, experiences, etc. Commonplace books have been kept from antiquity, and were kept particularly during the Renaissance and the 19th century.
<img width="5760" height="3240" width_o="5760" height_o="3240" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/60bb90c4b8b12f25d6f32d94db6b3fbe52d8fa4a6e5928974f04fe63af779eac/Slide-16_9---19.png" data-mid="136811638" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/60bb90c4b8b12f25d6f32d94db6b3fbe52d8fa4a6e5928974f04fe63af779eac/Slide-16_9---19.png" />
Why create a blackout poem using my commonplace entries?
I’ve had the habit of keeping a commonplace book for over five years. At the beginning of the Covid–19 pandemic, I made an effort to curate my commonplace entries to reflect my experience as a student during a global lockdown. I found that poetry was something I could turn to for comfort, and was creating blackout poetry from books, newspapers, and magazines I had on hand.&nbsp;I wanted to challenge myself, however, by creating a blackout poem using content from my own curated depository – my commonplace book.

<img width="1920" height="964" width_o="1920" height_o="964" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0267ca670bd1931efb1b44080b69c3cd8568f81147b34332784c3dfbce864ab2/Frame-22323.png" data-mid="140623800" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0267ca670bd1931efb1b44080b69c3cd8568f81147b34332784c3dfbce864ab2/Frame-22323.png" />Why digitize my commonplace blackout poem?

Two reasons:
1. This blackout poem is reflective of my experience as a student navigating a global pandemic. This digital poem serves as an archive to help those from the future better understand this specific moment in time.

2. I started noticing patterns in the types of things I was choosing to write down and wanted to further analyze my commonplace entries to learn more about my thought process during these unprecedented times. I wondered why was I writing down what I was writing down? What specific emotions did my entries evoke?

<img width="5328" height="1209" width_o="5328" height_o="1209" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2b992467679abffca28ccf1da8fc3a98625d9690a39e51a06989ca9bbe49bcfd/Slide-16_9---29.png" data-mid="136918546" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2b992467679abffca28ccf1da8fc3a98625d9690a39e51a06989ca9bbe49bcfd/Slide-16_9---29.png" />

I would be able to more easily locate answers to my questions if I digitized my entries than if I were to simply look at my physical book (which is filled with doodles and rather hard to interpret). I used JavaScript arrays, functions, and filters to create my commonplace blackout poem interface, and color coded my excerpts based on four different emotions evoked: nostalgia, optimism, humor, and sadness. A user would be would be able to highlight to uncover the text beneath the blacked out entries, or filter entries by emotion.

Timeline: May 2019 – September 2019
Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop

Skills: Visual design, experiential design, brand identity design, photography, marketing

Wayfinding and accessibility
I aided in expanding accessibility efforts and improving wayfinding across the World Trade Center. After going on ADA walkthroughs, I worked with my manager to redesign an Oculus floor plan, signage, and map that includes specific placement of elevators and construction sites throughout and surrounding the transportation hub.

I took charge in creating large scale site maps that would be posted across campus construction sites, helping tourists and locals navigate around the complex. Additionally, I helped place call stickers on all elevators within the Oculus to match ADA requirements.

Public installations

I was able to lead the design campaign for the LuckyRice Rice Paddy public seating installation at the World Trade Center’s Oculus Plaza. I created life-sized graphics, displayed within the Oculus and World Trade Center Campus, that celebrate and promote Asian culture through a culinary lens.

I designed a logo for Brandy Bajalia’s Canopy, an art installation of draping rosemary situated within Liberty Park. Incorporated visual motifs that alluse to rosemary’s healing properties as well as NYC’s resilience and strength.

Historical projects
I developed life-sized mock-up vinyls for the WTC Speaks Points of Interest Pilot Project’s historic E train corridor, a corridor that was part of the original World Trade Center concourse and had survived the 9/11 attacks.&nbsp;

Additionally, I conducted historical research and studied the New York City Transit Authority’s Graphic Standards Manual to create educational content and merchandise in line with the World Trade Center’s graphic identity.

Events

I collaborated with Marketing team and used Social Studio to strategically schedule paid content for all social media handles. I created and curated Summer Events content for @WTC_Official Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter handles.

The significance of “repurposing”
I’ve always had an affinity for visual things, and my parents nurtured this interest early on by enrolling me in studio art classes. It confused me that I enjoyed industrial design, CGI, and architecture more than replicating master paintings and drawing academic still lifes. I’d studied studio arts for over 12 years, but always had a gut feeling that it was not the right visual field for me. After having trained as a fine artist for over a decade, I pivoted from this identity marker in order to a focus on building, projecting, and designing experiences: something I am much more passionate about. It is difficult to pick a field of study and be expected to stick with it for the rest of their lives. Life pivots should not be seen as failures. Even the best of us have to repurpose and to adapt in order to pursue crazy ideas and embrace new beginnings.
<img width="1420" height="778" width_o="1420" height_o="778" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/23059810a775b31d393fe8628a46c53c1bd2648015e8ef8657402347ae8310e1/repurpose-1.png" data-mid="137736621" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/23059810a775b31d393fe8628a46c53c1bd2648015e8ef8657402347ae8310e1/repurpose-1.png" />

Inspirational figures behind this magazine
Inspirational figures, for me, include designers Sandy Liang and Kristina Ang. These are two women who had “repurposed” their lives by making pivotal career choices. Sandy’s experience in a STEM focused school pushed her towards what she is really confident in, and that is expressing herself through drawing and clothing.
Kristina was always drawn to science, but decided to study design. STEM and creativity are often separated into two distinct categories, causing Kristina to questions the legitimacy of a STEM background in the context of a fashion space. Ultimately, however, she realized that her skillset, at the intersection of science and design, is very much in demand.

I created an editorial publication called Repurpose Magazine. I was interested in the theme of repurposing because many businesses and individuals have had to “repurpose” in order to acclimate to the the changes brought on by the Covid–19 pandemic. I challenged myself by attempting to repurpose the images and text on my page to bring them out of the traditional type hierarchy while still adhering to a structured grid system. I blew up bylines and minimized titles. Images are tiny &amp; the more important “highlighted” portions of the text are in size 10 to accentuate the act of repurposing.

<img width="5760" height="2010" width_o="5760" height_o="2010" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1b8d3c5ee30a4712db8d40d7c3807c560e0a25270f6fec5ec78e21702dcf9f9a/Slide-16_9---28.png" data-mid="137737254" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1b8d3c5ee30a4712db8d40d7c3807c560e0a25270f6fec5ec78e21702dcf9f9a/Slide-16_9---28.png" /><img width="5760" height="2097" width_o="5760" height_o="2097" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/512066b2f8786fab8a092b2c625b22cba4a606838013745bf2192ba75639559a/Slide-16_9---31.png" data-mid="137737230" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/512066b2f8786fab8a092b2c625b22cba4a606838013745bf2192ba75639559a/Slide-16_9---31.png" />
Final magazineThe articles in my publication all relate to repurposing over time,whether it is how architecture is repurposed, how individuals go through career or life pivots, or how objects are repurposed to become more practical and multifaceted, etc. Five different colors separate the stories within the publication five different categories of repurposing: urban change, environmental, cultural fabrics, resilience, and individualism.

Tools: Figma

Skills: Surveys -&gt; personas -&gt; user flow -&gt; app map -&gt; wireframing -&gt; prototyping

The problem
	Emerging adulthood has been proposed as a new life stage between adolescence and young adulthood, lasting roughly from ages 18 to 25. Many emerging adults have difficulty navigating this transition by themselves.
Based on interviews with 10+ young adults ages 18 to 25, the most difficult challenges of emerging adulthood are:
1. Acclimating to living alone
2. Managing personal finances
3. Lack of motivation to do chores
4. Google does not always provide reliable solutions
5. The feeling of loneliness

SolutionNifti is an AI-backed chatbot that lends a listening ear and gives a helping hand. Send Nifti all your adulting concerns, and she’lll show you where to start.<img width="1000" height="608" width_o="1000" height_o="608" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ce8a74ade5d0a4b86b7157eb8f2677598561f3dae2e0f72ba8338a237d382abf/nifti1.gif" data-mid="142994167" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ce8a74ade5d0a4b86b7157eb8f2677598561f3dae2e0f72ba8338a237d382abf/nifti1.gif" />
Many emerging adults aged 18-25 experience major life milestones such as moving out and living alone. Nifti helps users acclimate to the responsibilities that come with adulthood, and actively learn new skills. All a user needs to do is tell Nifti what they’re going through or what they want to learn, and Nifti will provide a list of customized learning goals along with suggested learning categories. From that, Nifti will recommend personalized lessons to help users achieve their learning goals in bite sized chunks.
e.g. 1. How do I throw a good dinner party?2. How can I save money? What is budgeting?3. I really want to learn now to meal-prep. How?

Nifti provides learning categories, articles, and video lessons based on monthly learning goals tailored to the user

<img width="1000" height="608" width_o="1000" height_o="608" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3cda4b503f87afc527e7d417ab5c25d01c2ac169ab232c943e034655183c7a91/nifti3.gif" data-mid="142993853" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3cda4b503f87afc527e7d417ab5c25d01c2ac169ab232c943e034655183c7a91/nifti3.gif" />

Nifti prepopulates users’ dashboards with custom new learning lessons every week. Without imposed goal deadlines such as deadlines set in academic settings, users are more likely to realize that learning does not have to be a stressful chore. Upon realizing that goal setting can be something they take at their own pace, more users may find themselves learning “just for fun.”

A progress diary and the ability to link relevant resources that have helped you along the way
<img width="1000" height="608" width_o="1000" height_o="608" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/584a8c46326c02fcde1a6bf5cea53f4b2c68e263b4d0f606ccc4901a2b404bcb/nifti2.gif" data-mid="142991378" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/584a8c46326c02fcde1a6bf5cea53f4b2c68e263b4d0f606ccc4901a2b404bcb/nifti2.gif" />Users are able to deliberately learn new skills through searching for specific goals and topics and document their progress within the progress diaries on their home pages. But often, it is difficult to remember which specific articles or videos are actually helpful, and many have to search through months of browsing history in hopes of finding the resources they are looking for. Users are able to link the learning resources such as videos and articles to their progress journal entries for easy future access to articles and videos they find helpful.

After opening my own small business hand-crafting trinkets inspired by my cultural heritage, I started to wonder...
1. Where did the “stereotypical” Asian American visual identity centered around dragons and pagodas come from?2. How were decorative motifs often associated with Chinese and other Asian American businesses established?3. Do these existing visual patterns pay homage to Asian American culture?4. If not, how can I use design to help raise awareness of authentic Asian motifs?

<img width="1920" height="1127" width_o="1920" height_o="1127" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c4252c540cdbd32d0e6e1b944e1561d2d8cfee67d5cbcb12672948db1515a154/Frame-1321315043.png" data-mid="170242641" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c4252c540cdbd32d0e6e1b944e1561d2d8cfee67d5cbcb12672948db1515a154/Frame-1321315043.png" />

Historical research and findings

<img width="1920" height="1776" width_o="1920" height_o="1776" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c93b557bb722767b271d580b2a77fe5f951ce2c932d2e2c48852bcb0f22a3d3e/Slide-16_9---33-2.png" data-mid="138175610" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c93b557bb722767b271d580b2a77fe5f951ce2c932d2e2c48852bcb0f22a3d3e/Slide-16_9---33-2.png" />
After conducting in-depth research on the Chinese American restaurant branding phenomenon for three months, I found that Chinese American food has been perpetuated to a distinctive stereotype in the last century, due to the stigmatization of Chinese immigrants and the need for a distinctive brand identity in order to appeal to Western audiences.

The Chinese Exclusion Act and anti-Chinese sentiments caused many Americans to adopt negative stereotypes towards the Chinese, deeming them as perverts and opium addicts. Thus, it was difficult for the young generation of Chinese Americans to find employment in a society that deemed them second-class citizens.

The increase of Chinese American restaurants in the United States is attributed to a loophole in American immigration law, and the depiction of Chinese being “exotic” and “oriental” led to the hybridization of traditional Chinese culture with Western cultures, creating a hybridized restaurant aesthetic that remains to this day.

Helping small businesses in Manhattan’s Chinatown

I developed visual identities for AAPI–owned restaurants and conducted brand positioning research and analysis, and created moodboards, illustrations, and digital prototypes. This resulted in more authentic, modern brands that pay homage to Asian culture and history. No more stereotypical pagodas and dragon motifs!I helped branded Smoove, a newly opened Chinatown fusion ice cream parlor. Established brand guidelines, designed a stationary set, digital and analog menus, promotional posters, social media content, and a vinyl wall graphic.I assisted in creating graphics for Yumpling Taiwanese Cafe in Long Island City, NY, as well as various condiment brands in partnership with Overice Studio.

With the increase of globalization, however, the visual culture around Chinese American restaurant branding is quickly adapting and changing from its second-class status to cuisine with an elevated place in American culture as a whole.

Albeit steady progress in relations to the status of Asian Americans, current events taking place in 2021 have shown that there is still much stigmatization towards the Asian community and that even if not immediately apparent, visual culture can impact an individual’s perception of the world around them.
Before taking visual culture for granted, including the stereotypical branding of Chinese American restaurants, however, individuals should analyze and interpret for themselves the origin of such visual concepts, and the historical implications of these concepts.
